Mums and Babies

How can an osteopath help mums after delivery?

Once the little one is born the body will need to readjust again. During the delivery mums bodies have been doing a great job preparing for arrival of baby and this may result in the body becoming tense and tired. Delivery can be hard work and new mums will likely need some extra support getting back to normal. Additionally, mums are now lifting their babies and carrying them in their arms whereas before they were carrying the little ones in their belly. Muscles can become tight and some mums can develop pain in their neck, shoulders, lower back or other areas across their bodies. An Osteopath can help ease these discomforts using manual Osteopathy techniques and can also help advise on postures for sitting and standing after pregnancy with the aim of relieving discomforts and aches and pains across the body.

How can an osteopath help babies or children?

Babies are adapting to the new world around them and some babies and children may experience aches and pains. An osteopath can help both babies and children become more settled. There are many reasons why babies cry and sometimes this can be due to feeling discomfort. An Osteopath will use a variety of techniques to relieve aches and muscular pains also helping to relieve muscle tension which may occur in your little ones and will be able to provide guidance on exercising your baby at different ages.

My parents have both been working as manual medicine practitioners (Physios) back at home for most of their lives. I was born into a family where there were constant talks about patients, conditions, how to improve something in the body and endless miraculous stories of successful treatments. Many techniques were trialled and tested on me and my younger sister, so I know very well how a patient can feel from a young age. My mother had a particular interest in developing a clinic, specialising on the rehabilitation of children and mums after difficult births, such that were leading to development of severe conditions such as cerebral palsy. As I graduated from Medical University, this was when I started my career in manual medicine back in 2004 along with my career  in Neurology. Since then, seeing many mums and babies I was using my mothers approach and later improving and developing my own skills in regards to which techniques and approaches are working best and for whom. I have extensive experience in working with epilepsy, post stroke rehabilitation and conditions in children after complicated deliveries with methods of Cranial and structural Osteopathy. I studied Paediatrics in Medical University for over 500 hours both in theory and at a bed side the same refers to Obstetrics and Gynecology. Additionally I sat state exams for each of them. I have seen many conditions in real life and not only on youtube videos, which contributed to my diagnostic skills.
